The Pain-Free Latch: A Step-by-Step Guide
Position before latch
If the body is wrong, the latch is wrong.
-
Belly-to-belly
-
Head–shoulder–hips aligned
-
Baby close, not reaching
Nose to nipple
This encourages a wide-open mouth.
Not chin to nipple. Not mouth on nipple.
Wait for the yawn
A deep latch requires:
-
Wide jaw
-
Tongue down
-
Lips ready to flange outward
If you rush → shallow latch.
Bring baby to breast
Not breast to baby.
Your elbow and baby’s spine work together.
Gentle tug vs sharp pain
The first seconds may feel tight.
But pain that lasts is a warning.
Break suction → try again.
There is no shame in retrying 10 times.
Why biological nurturing works
The laid-back position uses gravity.
Baby falls naturally into a deep latch.
It’s not “lazy.”
It’s evolutionary.
